The Menachem Shemi Association

The Menachem Shemi Association, formerly named The Zohar Tsvaim Association, was formally established in 2008 to commemorate the artistic heritage of painter Menachem Shemi. The association’s goals were defined in its founding document as follows:

  • To impart to the public the awareness of the personality and artistic heritage of the painter Menachem Shemi (1897-1951).
  • To mount exhibitions of the works of Menachem Shemi in collaboration with art museums in Tel Aviv, Ein Harod, Haifa and others in 2009-2011.
  • To publish catalogues of the works of Menachem Shemi and publications relating to him and his heritage either independently or in cooperation with Israeli and foreign cultural institutions.
  • To set up and operate an Internet website dedicated to Menachem Shemi's work and heritage.
  • To raise financial and other resources by contributions and donations for the promotion of the association's goals and their fulfillment.

Within months of its formation, the association began to realise its goals by raising initial contributions, publishing an extensive book dedicated to Shemi's personality and work, setting up a comprehensive exhibition of his work at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (September – November 2009) the Haifa Museum of Art (February – July 2010) and at the Museum of Art, Ein Harod (September – December 2010) and by launching and operating this website.

The elegant book, Menachem Shemi - Man and Artist by Daliah Belkine, features 100 colour reproductions and many illustrations (fully English captioned). Published by the Zohar Tsvaim Association in 2009 the 260-page book, in Hebrew and English, contains an extensive study of Menachem Shemi and his art by Daliah Belkine (with English abstract) and accompanying articles by Prof. Mordechai Omer and Dr. Galia Bar Or (full English translations).

The book can be ordered through the association: [email protected].

The Menachem Shemi Association was set up and is operated by volunteers who receive no remuneration. All of the association's income is dedicated to fulfilling its goals. The association will heartily welcome any donations to help promote its objectives.
